Take the No War With Iran Pledge

The Iraq war was launched 9 years ago. Will you take the time  to stop the next war?

Take the Iran Pledge of Resistance

Peace Action is working with the The Iran Pledge of Resistance (IPOR) to organize an emergency response network capable of responding to any U.S. intervention in Iran or the Middle East.

Over the past few months, there has been much talk about the possibility of a U.S. war with Iran. Israel, one of the U.S.’s closest allies in the region, is threatening military action which could pull the US into war.

Despite the fact that top U.S. intelligence officials have made consistent statements that Iran does not have a nuclear weapons program, President Obama and the Republican presidential candidates and members of Congress on both sides of “the aisle” are saying that “all options are on the table” to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.

Let’s stop this war before it starts. What if millions joined together to say no to war, through a direct action network?

The SANE Act: Sign our Petition to Support Reductions in Nuclear Weapon Spending

SANE ActIn February 2012 Representative Edward Markey (D-MA) introduced the Smarter Approach to Nuclear Expenditures (SANE) Act, H.R. 3974, to cut the bloated nuclear weapons budget.  Since then over 44 other members of Congress have co-sponsored this critical piece of legislation.  Please contact your New York representative today and urge your member of Congress to cosponsor the SANE Act! Click here to sign our online petition!

The SANE Act cuts over $100 billion from nuclear weapons programs over the next ten years. The bill calls for the reduction of the total number of deployed nuclear warheads and their delivery systems, the prohibition of developing new nuclear delivery vehicles, and the termination of wasteful funding for nuclear facilities.

Thank you to the following seven NY members of Congress who have (as of March 13, 2012) signed on to the SANE Act as co-sponsors:

Rep. Bishop (NY-1), Rep. Nadler (NY-8), Rep. Clarke (NY-11), Rep. Maloney (NY-14), Rep. Rangel (NY-15), Rep. Hinchey (NY-22), and Rep. Slaughter (NY-28)

If one of these progressive voices represents you, please call or email them to thank them! If your Representative is not a co-sponsor, please call or email them and ask them to sign on!

While city, county, and state budgets are being eviscerated and schools, citizens, and public services have to do with less funding, the federal government still finds billions of dollars to spend on unnecessary, outdated, and expensive nuclear weapons. We need new priorities in government spending that favor human needs over nuclear weapons and wars!

Peace Action New York State is proud that Congressman Markey chose to call this bill the SANE Act after our predecessor organization, the Committee for a SANE Nuclear Policy.

You are invited to a lively debate and party at the home of David and Sally Jones to raise money for peace and hear the pros and cons of creating a national third party.  Dan Cantor, the Executive Director of Working Families (WFP), will speak to the issue.  WFP is a New York State party advocating for well-paying jobs, affordable housing, accessible health care, better public schools and more investment in public services.  It is aligned with parties from other states but is not national.  In a political environment where voters are disenchanted with the major parties…is a national third party a possible option?

Peace Action of New York State (PANYS) and the Peace Action Fund of New York State (PAFNYS) are the New York affiliates of Peace Action, the largest grassroots peace organization in the country.  Donations to PAFNYS are tax-deductible and can be made online by clicking here.

The 2012 Global Zero Student Summit!

Global Zero Student Summit 2012Hey everyone! This past weekend, I attended the Global Zero Student Summit, hosted by Yale University! The Summit gathered over 300 student activists to learn about the most pressing topics in our generation’s effort to achieve nuclear disarmament. We heard from a wide range of experts in the field, from former Ambassadors to ex-CIA agents, and discussed strategies to build and maintain strong anti-nuke campaigns on campus and in our community. Check out our Facebook Page for pictures from the event or click here to read more about what the experts had to say about what is still the most pressing issue of our time!

Nuclear Guidance – Options & Leaks

By: Alicia Godsberg, Executive Director

On February 14, 2012 the Associated Press ran a story that was “leaked” to the press about options President Obama is considering for the future size of America’s nuclear force. One of these options apparently was for a force of between 300-400 deployed nuclear warheads, which would be approximately an 80% decrease from our currently deployed numbers. This of course says nothing about the thousands of nuclear warheads that could remain in storage, but deploying 300-400 nuclear weapons would nevertheless represent a major shift in U.S. policy. Other options supposedly under consideration are for maintaining the status quo, 1,000-1,100 deployed warheads, and 700-800 deployed warheads. In reality, the review is still underway and no new options have been sent yet to the president. So why have some Senators taken to the floor of the Senate to decry that President Obama is unilaterally disarming? Read more
